Boortmalt, a global leader in the malting industry, with a production capacity of 3 million tonnes and 27 plants across 5 continents. Known for providing high-quality barley malts and is trusted by brewers, distillers, and the food industry. This collaboration started in January and since then ClimateCamp is helping Boortmalt improve its sustainability efforts and make a positive impact on its customers and the entire supply chain.

The Challenges

Before teaming up with ClimateCamp, Boortmalt faced various challenges. They needed to measure and manage the carbon footprints from Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in their customers' operations. On top of that, they had to gather downstream Scope 3 emissions data to figure out the impact of their products.

Boortmalt is investing a lot in their Pure Local Malt, which is made using regenerative agriculture techniques to have a much lower carbon footprint. They needed a solid platform to help boost the sales of this eco-friendly product and convincing farmers to switch to these sustainable practices and getting customers interested in buying their product.

ClimateCamp’s Solutions

  • With our assistance, Boortmalt can now share Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) information with all of their customers.
  • Aligning proper messaging towards customers to onboard them onto the ClimateCamp’s platform and helping them make informed decisions and report their sustainability progress. This way, customers can compare the environmental impact of different malting products and calculate their own Scope 3 emissions.
  • Encouraging customers to measure and report their progress towards carbon reduction targets. In return the customer has the opportunity to share their Organizational Footprint Intensity based with their supplier Boortmalt.
“Breweries are asking for our Product Carbon Footprint of Malt, but Boortmalt must also collect the downstream Scope 3 emissions from breweries. ClimateCamp not only facilitates this exchange but also provides greater support for our sustainable Pure Local Malt.”
A comment from Alexander Hendrickx, Group Key Account manager at Boortmalt

Tangible Results and Improvements

Since adopting ClimateCamp’s solutions, Boortmalt has seen several clear benefits. They now have a better way to assess Scope 1 and 2 emissions and promote their eco-friendly malt options. ClimateCamp's software help customers understand the benefits of switching to sustainable products, which has led to increased interest and opportunities to sell their sustainable Pure Local Malt. Additionally, Boortmalt can now accurately calculate the downstream impact of their sold products.

This collaboration has also strengthened relationships with customers by aligning on shared sustainability goals and promoting transparent data sharing. By addressing these challenges, Boortmalt has not only improved its own sustainability performance but also helped its customers do the same.

Conclusion

Boortmalt's investment in Pure Local Malt and the support from ClimateCamp highlight a successful way to integrate sustainability into business operations and supply chains. This partnership sets a good example for other companies aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable world.
